Year 2 PE: Writing Yoga Stories
Year 2 have been using this half-term's yoga learning to create their own yoga flow in the form of yoga stories. Using previously learnt yoga poses, the children created story maps to sequence their flow. Some of the yoga stories included "hungry lions", "seals trapped on boats" and "very calm butterflies". Miss Mulligan was incredibly impressed with the creativity and leadership skills Year 2 showed during this lesson!
Year 2 History: Comparing Monarchs
During this week's history, Year 2 have been comparing two very different monarchs: William the Conqueror and King Charles III. After discussing the qualities of both monarchs, Year 2 voted on which features they believe make a good monarch such as fairness and bravery. Then, everyone designed their perfect monarch and decided if they would be more like William the Conqueror or King Charles III! What qualities would your perfect monarch have?
Year 1 and 2 trip to Imagine That!
Year 1 and 2 had an amazing trip to Imagine That! in Liverpool on Monday. From imaginative play to slime making, science experiments to magical snow, the day was jam packed with fun and excitement for everyone - including the teachers! Well done Year 1 and 2 for your incredible behaviour and amazing curiosity that you showed throughout the day.
Year 2 - Fluency - Adding 3 Numbers
Year 2 have been sharpening their maths fluency this week by using dice to add three numbers together. The children have been learning to work more efficiently by spotting number bonds or doubles first to make their calculations quicker and easier. After solving a sum, they explained their reasoning to a partner, who then checked the answer and gave feedback. Mrs Cookson was delighted to hear such fantastic mathematical talk and to see the children working so brilliantly together to improve their speed and accuracy!
Year 2 - Colourful Semantics
Year 2 have been making fantastic progress with their writing this term by using Colourful Semantics to build more descriptive sentences. This approach helps the children organise their thoughts by clearly identifying who is in the story, what they are doing, where they are, and when the action is taking place. Mrs Cookson and Miss Mulligan have noticed a huge improvement in the children's work, with their independent writing becoming much more structured, detailed, and confident!
Year 2 - Guided Reading - New Vocabulary
This week, we began exploring a new text all about climate. To prepare for our reading, we went on a vocabulary hunt around the classroom! We spotted new, tricky words and used Widgit images as clues to help us work out what they might mean. The children did a brilliant job acting as "vocabulary detectives," using the picture clues to write predictions on their whiteboards. We focused on understanding specific climate types, including Mediterranean, arid, tropical, and polar. It was fantastic to see the children using their inference skills to tackle these big words before we started our reading. We are now ready to dive deeper into the text!
Year 2 - History - Norman Castles
Year 2: Castle Builders! This week, Year 2 have been busy learning how William the Conqueror protected himself after the Battle of Hastings. We discovered that he built strong castles to keep his army safe and help him rule over England. Working together, the children built their own Motte and Bailey and stone castles! We had great fun naming the different parts, including the high motte mounds, the bailey courtyards, and the deep moats. Well done to our fantastic junior historians for such brilliant teamwork!
Year 2 - RE - Jesus Heals the Blind Man
This week in RE, Year 2 have been learning the story of Jesus healing the blind man. We explored the miracle of how Jesus restored the man's sight and discussed why this caused a stir with the Pharisees. We talked about how the Pharisees were cross because Jesus had performed the healing on the Sabbath, which was meant to be a strict day of rest. To help us understand the story better, we used blindfolds to experience what it might be like to lose our sense of sight. This helped the children reflect on how the man might have felt before he met Jesus and why the miracle was so life-changing. The children showed wonderful empathy and had some very thoughtful discussions about kindness and following rules.
Year 2 - Art - Worry Dolls
In this creative Art lesson, Year 2 explored the origin and purpose of Worry Dolls, learning how these traditional figures help hold our worries for us. Using twigs collected from around the school grounds, the children carefully selected sticks that suggested human forms, identifying natural shapes for arms and legs. To bring their characters to life, they mastered wrapping techniques with colourful wool, adding vibrant textures to their unique creations. It was a wonderful way to combine fine motor skills with an important discussion about wellbeing and sharing our feelings.
Year 2 - History - Bayeux Tapestry
In this lesson, our Year 2 historians became detectives to uncover how William the Conqueror claimed the English throne. By exploring the Bayeux Tapestry—a 70-metre embroidery nearly 1,000 years old—the children hunted for historical clues like crowns and thrones. Through a "gallery walk" and caption-matching challenge, they pieced together the story of the Norman invasion and the Battle of Hastings. It was wonderful to see the children recognise how royal traditions, such as coronations, have remained remarkably similar from King Harold’s time to the present day!
Year 2 - Maths - Finding Half
In our latest Year 2 maths session, our young mathematicians turned their whiteboards into "fraction stations" to explore the concept of finding half of a quantity. By using a fraction bar to represent the whole, the children carefully shared out physical counters into two equal groups, ensuring they understood that halving is the same as dividing by two. This hands-on approach helped the pupils move from concrete objects to abstract thinking, as they visualised how 1/2 of a set of items can be calculated quickly and accurately. There was a fantastic "lightbulb moment" across the classroom as they realised that for the groups to be fair, each side must hold the exact same number of counters!
Year 2 - English - Opinions and Explanations
We took our English lesson outside into the sunshine for a fun debate about Aladdin. Mrs Cookson read out different statements, like "Aladdin is brave," and the children had to stand in a line to show if they agreed or disagreed. Once they picked their spot, they explained their reasons to the rest of the class. It was a fantastic way to practice speaking and listening while thinking carefully about the characters in our story.
