Year 2 - Maths - Flexible Partitioning

Year 2 have been busy in maths, extending our knowledge of partitioning numbers! We've moved beyond just tens and ones to discover that there are so many more ways to split a number. This is called flexible partitioning. Instead of only thinking of 23 as 20 and 3, we now know it can also be 10 and 13, or even 15 and 8. We're getting much more confident with this new skill, which helps us with our mental maths and problem-solving!

Reception - Maths- Matching

The children had a wonderful time in maths today, going outdoors to find different natural objects in the gardens. The children selected leaves and sticks of all different shapes and sizes. When we got back to Reception, we looked through what we had found and started to put some order to them. We were looking for objects that looked the same. Did it have the same colour? Was it the same size? Did they look the same? The children pointed out that the leaves looked the same colour but they were a different size. Sticks matched in length and colour. Working together we matched a lot of the objects up and made groups.

Nursery And Pre-School - Imaginative Play, Pirates!

The nursery and preschool children have loved the pirate theme this week, quickly selecting dress-up items to transform into swashbuckling pirates. A significant highlight was the children's collaborative effort in constructing a pirate ship using the jumbo building bricks. They worked together, demonstrating emerging cooperation and negotiation skills as they discussed where to place bricks or how to make the ship bigger. Once their magnificent ship was constructed, the children climbed aboard, steering their vessel and actively sailing their ship across the imaginary seas. They eagerly engaged in target practice, throwing 'cannonballs' at 'enemy ships' in the distance. This action-packed segment refined their gross motor skills, including throwing and aiming, and further fueled their imaginative narrative. The rich vocabulary used by adults (e.g., "Ahoy, matey!", "Walk the plank!") was frequently echoed by the children, showcasing developing communication and language skills within their play.
