Reception - Maths - Making Maps
This week in maths, Reception have been exploring maps – using our maths eyes to spot shapes, patterns and position as part of our White Rose learning. We looked carefully at a simple story map and then worked together to create our own, using big paper, bold colours and brilliant teamwork! The children talked about where things were, using mathematical language like next to, behind, and in front of. They thought about directions and routes, and even explained their maps to others – practising reasoning skills along the way. White Rose encourages us to see maths in the world around us, and map-making is a great way to build those early spatial and positional skills. Plus, it gets us thinking visually and creatively – perfect for young mathematicians with curious eyes!

Year 1 - Maths - Recognising Notes
In Year 1, we're building essential life skills! Our recent lesson focused on recognizing paper money and notes, helping us understand the value of different denominations. We had a great time learning to identify different coins and notes – a super important step in becoming money smart! Take a look at our progress.
Year 1 - Maths - Recognising Money and Unitising
Our Year 1 mathematicians had a fantastic time exploring the world of coins this week! We sharpened our super-seeing skills by subitising – instantly recognizing the number of coins without counting. It was a brilliant way to build our number sense and get hands-on with money!
Year 2 - Maths - Telling Time
In this lesson, the children learned how to tell time, specifically focusing on key time increments: "o'clock," "quarter past," "half past," and "quarter to." They practiced these concepts using individual clock models, allowing for hands-on manipulation and understanding of how the hour and minute hands move to represent these times.
Reception Maths – Exploring Repeat Patterns
Today in maths, Reception continued their learning on repeating patterns. We started with visual prompts and the children worked in small groups to recreate the patterns before having a go at continuing them independently using a variety of resources like cubes, shapes and pegs. The children showed fantastic focus and teamwork as they spotted the unit of repeat and carefully selected objects to match and extend each pattern. This learning links to the EYFS Mathematics Early Learning Goal: ???? “Explore and represent patterns within numbers up to 10, including evens and odds, double facts and how quantities can be distributed equally.” It also supports: ???? Communication and Language – discussing colours, shapes and sequences ???? Physical Development – fine motor control when placing and organising resources ???? Personal, Social and Emotional Development – taking turns and working together We were so proud of the children’s confidence and creativity in today’s session!
Year 6: Maths - Theme Park Challenge
In maths year 6 have been working collaboratively to design their own theme park bringing together aspects of maths and English that they have learnt throughout the year. They have been working out how much it costs to run the park, as well as how to make sure that their theme park will be profitable.
Year 2 - Maths
Our young mathematicians have been busy! They've been deepening their understanding of number operations, practicing addition and subtraction skills both on the interactive whiteboards and through hands-on activities with manipulatives. This practical approach helps them visualise and solve problems effectively, building a strong foundation in maths.
Nursery - Maths - Art - Creating Lions With Simple Shapes
This week, Nursery class had a fantastic time exploring shapes in a creative maths lesson at the craft table! We got busy making magnificent lion faces using simple shapes: circles and triangles. Before sticking, the children were encouraged to trace the edges of each shape with their fingers. As they traced, they voiced the names and descriptions of the shapes – "round and round" for the circle and "spikey" for the triangle! Following a modelled example, the children carefully placed their shapes to create their own unique lion faces. It was wonderful to see their concentration as they copied the design, developing their fine motor skills and shape recognition all at once. Our little mathematicians did a brilliant job bringing their lions to life while learning all about basic shapes.
Reception - Maths - Equal and Unequal Groups
Look at our brilliant Reception class in action! They've been immersed in some fantastic Maths learning, focusing on "Equal and Unequal Groups." It's wonderful to see the children so engaged and hands-on, developing crucial early mathematical concepts. They're exploring: Counting and Cardinality: Precisely counting objects within groups. Comparison: Visually and practically identifying when groups have the same or different numbers of items. Problem Solving: Working together and independently to sort and arrange objects to make groups equal or understand why they are unequal. Practical activities like these are so vital in the early years for building a strong foundation in maths. Children used different activities to find errors in repeated patterns, some children had to find the error using colour bears some had picture cards and had to identify the error and others used lego bricks to help them find the error in the repeated pattern. Finding errors in repeated patterns is a crucial step in developing early mathematical thinking in Early Years children. It helps them understand the concept of a "unit of repeat" and strengthens their logical reasoning skills. This helps the children with- Pattern Recognition: It reinforces their understanding of what a pattern is and how it repeats. Logical Reasoning: It encourages them to think critically and identify what doesn't fit the established rule. Problem-Solving: It provides a hands-on opportunity to fix mistakes and see the immediate result of their correction.
Year 6: Maths
After our main maths lessons, year 6 have been enjoying working on their mental arithmetic by playing dice games. They have been recognising number bonds at speed to try and win the game.
