Nursery And Pre-School - Geography - Habitats
Our Nursery and Preschool children have been exploring the fascinating world of habitats this week! We began by thinking about where we live as humans and expanded our ideas to discover where different animals—like birds, squirrels, and hedgehogs—make their homes. The children then set off outdoors on a habitat hunt around our environment. They put their keen observational skills to work, spotting real-life animal homes like birds' nests, spider webs, and crunchy leaf piles. Inspired by what they found, the children gathered natural resources like sticks, leaves, and bark to build their own minibeast and animal habitats, thinking carefully about which creature would feel safe and cozy living inside. It was a brilliant, hands-on way for our young learners to build early geographical awareness and care for the natural world!
Year 3 - Geography - Classifying Rocks
Year 3 has been busy exploring the fascinating world of geology during their latest geography lessons. The children have been hands-on with practical investigations, carefully examining and sorting various rock samples into three distinct groups: sedimentary, igneous, and metamorphic. By closely observing their textures, hardness, and formation clues, pupils developed a brilliant understanding of how different rocks are formed across our planet. Well done, Year 3, for your fantastic enquiry and teamwork.
Year 6 - Geography - Fieldwork
Have you ever wondered how the size of a local population changes the environment on our very own doorstep? Over two action-packed geography lessons, Year 6 took their learning outdoors into the local area to investigate traffic, litter, and noise pollution across busier and quieter locations. Navigating with Ordnance Survey maps, the children collected both quantitative traffic tallies and qualitative data—listening carefully to assess noise levels and using Likert scales to judge environmental impact along their route. Back in the classroom, they carefully analysed their data sets to craft detailed fieldwork reports, complete with thoughtful suggestions on how to improve and protect our local community!
Nursery And Pre-School - Geography - Creating Witches Brooms And Potions
Inspired by this week's story, 'Room on the Broom', our children headed outside on an autumn outdoor hunt to gather natural materials and build their very own broomsticks! While searching for the perfect sticks, the children put their observational skills to work by exploring the seasonal changes happening in their local environment. They noticed that the trees were shedding their leaves onto the ground and spotted a rich new palette of autumn colors, eagerly discovering leaves in shades of brown, orange, and yellow. It was a wonderful, hands-on way to connect storytime magic with early geographical understanding and the natural rhythms of nature!
Reception-Understanding The World-Comparing Woods and Towns
In our Understanding the World learning this week, Reception compared the different features found in woods and towns. The children then painted pictures and used small world resources alongside construction blocks to build their own towns and woodlands, carefully incorporating the key features they discussed.
Year 3 - Geography - Identifying Rocks In The School Grounds
Year 3 pupils have been out and about in the school grounds for their latest geography lesson, putting their fieldwork skills into practice by identifying and examining different types of rocks around the academy. Great curiosity and excellent observation skills shown by all involved.
Nursery and Pre-school - UTW- Visit to the Library
What a brilliant morning our Nursery children had today! We set off on foot through Darwen, heading to Darwen Library for a special storytime session. The children were absolute stars on the walk, chatting excitedly and pointing out everything they could see along the way. Once we arrived, everyone settled down nicely on the cosy carpet. The librarian gave us a lovely welcome and explained all about the magic of the library and how it works. Then came the main event—storytime! We read the classic 'Dear Zoo', and some of the children were even picked to act out different parts of the book. There was so much laughter as our little actors brought the story to life! A huge well done to all the children for their fantastic behaviour, and a big thank you to the team at Darwen Library for hosting such a memorable visit. We can't wait for our next trip!
Year 1 - Geography - Recognising Human and Physical Features in a Non European Country
Our brilliant Year 1s have been turning into mini-geographers this week! As part of our Kapow curriculum, we’ve hopped across the globe (metaphorically, of course!) to explore the incredible city of Shanghai. The children have been learning all about the difference between human features (things built by people) and physical features (things made by nature) in a non-European country.
Year 5: Geography
In geography this week, year 5 have been learning about how to look after our oceans. Linking to work in English about environmental activist Greta Thunberg. The class were very knowledgeable and thoughtful in their responses, which was great to see!
Year 2 - Geography -Features of a Coastal Town
Our adventurous Year 2 pupils went on a virtual seaside holiday this week, using Google Maps to explore the beautiful coastal town of Weymouth! After successfully navigating the digital map, the children used the 'Pegman' street view feature to drop right into the heart of the town, exploring the area virtually to spot its distinct human and physical geography. As they "walked" through the streets and along the seafront, they became geography detectives—identifying features like sandy beaches and cliffs alongside piers and seaside shops, writing each discovery onto a post-it note, and classifying them into the correct categories on their tables. It was an incredibly engaging way to build their digital and geographical skills, and the classroom was buzzing with excitement as they discovered what makes a coastal town so unique!
Reception- Geography- Rockpool Habitat
This week in Geography, our Reception explorers have been diving deep into the seaside as we learned all about the wonders of rockpools! The children absolutely loved using our interactive board to virtually splash around and explore these miniature marine ecosystems. Through an engaging interactive game, they took turns dragging and dropping labels to identify a rockpool and name the fascinating creatures and plants you might find hidden inside it. It was fantastic to hear their excitement as they discovered anemones, crabs, and starfish, all while developing their vocabulary and digital skills!
Year 5 Geography Presentation
Year 5 have been turning into true global citizens this week during their Geography lesson. Focusing on the delicate beauty of our oceans, the children explored the powerful impact humans have on marine life and coral reefs. The class showcased some incredible skills, proving they are real experts in their field: They successfully interpreted thematic maps, identifying where coral reefs are located and tracking how ocean temperatures are shifting. From plastic pollution to the effects of climate change, the children clearly explained the various ways human activity is altering our marine environments and the negative impact this will have on us. They didn't just share facts; they inspired us all to think a little more about how we treat our blue planet.
