Hands-on Maths: Unpicking Fact Families in Year 2

Our Year 2 mathematicians were put to the test this week during an active, hands-on maths lesson on fact families!
The children were given a collection of completely muddled-up number sentences. Channeling their key knowledge of addition, subtraction, and number bonds, they set straight to work finding 3 friends with a matching number, but different calculation sentences. 
Once the number sentences were paired up, pupils matched each family to its corresponding part-whole model before building the numbers using physical Base 10 equipment. It was fantastic to see such great enthusiasm and teamwork throughout the room, with everyone mastering how numbers relate to one another—confident in the knowledge that if 6 + 4 = 10, then 4 + 6 = 10, 10 - 4 = 6, and 10 - 6 = 4!
