Year 1 - Phonics and Maths
Year 1 have been busy using this phonics knowledge to match letters to images to create the correct words and practicing number formation in provision!
Pre-School-Phonics-Singing With What's In The Bag
Pre-School have started our phonics this week while singing what's in the bag. Each child is given an opportunity to pick out a nursery rhyme from the bag for all to sing. Children loved to sit in a circle singing what's in the bag before a child is chosen to pick out one object for all to sing.
This week in Reception – Phonics
This week in Reception – Phonics This week your little one will be starting their phonics journey. Phonics is the way we teach children to read and write by helping them recognise the sounds that letters make. We begin with the very basics and build up step by step so children can blend sounds together to read words and segment words to spell. Some key things to know: • Sounds, not letter names – At this stage, we focus on the sounds letters make (e.g. s = “sss”) rather than their names (“ess”). • Blending – Children learn to push sounds together to read simple words (for example, s-a-t becomes sat). • Segmenting – The opposite skill: breaking words into sounds to help with spelling (dog = d-o-g). • Daily practice – We revisit sounds regularly, and lots of repetition helps them stick. You can support at home by listening for sounds in words when you’re out and about, pointing out letters in books or signs, and encouraging your child to enjoy sharing stories with you. Please do let me know if you have any questions about phonics—I’m always happy to chat about how best to support your child.
Beached Themed Reading Cafe
Wow, what an incredible day we had at our beach-themed reading café! A massive thank you to everyone who joined us and made it such a fantastic success. It was truly wonderful to see so much fun, laughter, and, most importantly, a clear passion for books filling the room!
Year 1 - Phonics - Phase 5
This week in Year 1 phonics, we've been busy bees, diving into the exciting world of Phase 5! We've been exploring new graphemes and alternative pronunciations for sounds we already know, helping us to become even more super readers and writers. Our brains have been working hard to decode tricky words and stretch out sounds, and we're so proud of the progress everyone is making!
Nursery - Phonics - Identifying Animal Sounds
Today, the nursery class actively engaged in a Phase 1 Phonics activity, focusing on listening and identifying wild animal sounds. The children displayed excellent listening skills, showing focused attention as different animal noises were played. They enthusiastically participated, attempting to identify each sound and often trying to imitate them. It was noted that some of the sounds were familiar, like the lion, while others, such as the elephant or monkey, introduced them to new animals, directly linking with our current story, Dear Zoo. This activity was excellent for developing their auditory discrimination, a key pre-reading skill, and also supported their language development and cognitive abilities through sound-matching and recall. The children's high level of engagement showed it was a fun and effective learning experience.
Pre School - Phonics - Sound Hunt
In Preschool the children have started to learn some of the sounds from phase two phonics. Each week the children will learn two new sounds. The sounds we have learnt so far are s,a,t and p. The children love to find objects that begin with the given sound, we play games with these sounds with the flashcards hidden around our nursery. Phase 2 phonics focuses on introducing new letter sounds and building blending and segmenting skills. Children learn how to combine sounds to make words and how to break words down into individual sounds.
Year 1 - English - Non Fiction Books
Our amazing Year 1 explorers have been on a thrilling adventure, uncovering the secrets hidden within non-fiction books! We've had so much fun becoming super-sleuths, searching for fascinating features like bold headings that tell us what we'll learn, captivating photographs that bring the world to life, and helpful captions that give us extra clues. It's been brilliant seeing their curiosity bloom as they discover new facts and information. What incredible things will they learn next?
Reception- Phonics - Tricky Words
Through playing Bingo and writing words using magnetic letters, play dough and sand, the children have had great fun learning their tricky words in Phonics.
Phonics Screening Check
The Phonics Screening Check is a short assessment that takes place in Year 1 to check your child’s ability to read words using phonics. It helps teachers understand how well children are progressing with their early reading skills. During the check, your child will be asked to read 40 words—some real and some “nonsense” (pseudo words). These words are designed to test their ability to blend sounds together. The check is done one-on-one with a teacher in a relaxed and supportive environment. You can help your child at home by practicing phonics sounds, blending words together, and reading regularly. Encouraging them to spot sounds in books and playing simple word games can make a big difference! We will be hosting a parent session to provide more information about the Phonics Screening Check and how you can support your child at home. This will be a great opportunity to ask questions and see some of the strategies we use in school. If you have any questions, please speak to your child’s teacher—we’re here to support you and your child on their reading journey!
Reception - English - Writing a Sentence
This half-term, we are focusing on writing simple captions and sentences. Each morning, the children will write the stem sentence “I can see” and use their phonetic knowledge to spell different objects. We will be observing their ability to construct phonetically plausible sentences and form letters correctly.
Year 1 Phonics
Year 1 were learning the /air/ sound written as are as in share and ear as in bear. They read lots of words before writing them on their boards.
